His Holiness the Dalai Lama is unable to travel due to ill health. His scheduled appearances at UCLA on Monday, May 2, have been cancelled.

However, the afternoon symposium in Royce Hall will go ahead without the Dalai Lama's participation. Geshe Thupten Jinpa, a principal English translator for His Holiness and Ph.D. in Religious Studies (Cambridge University), will join the discussion with UCLA neuroscientists.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will visit UCLA for a public talk, "What Is True Wisdom?", and a public symposium, "Buddhism and Neuroscience: a Discussion on Attention, Mental Flexibility and Compassion," both on May 2. The events are presented by the UCLA Center for Buddhist Studies, UCLA International Institute, UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, and UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations.

PARKING INFORMATION

Parking: Parking will be available for purchase for $10 per car in Parking Structure 2 (P2), Parking Structure 3 (P3), and Parking Structure 4 (P4). See campus map for parking locations. Parking will be extremely limited. Therefore, we encourage campus attendees to walk to Royce Hall.

Be advised that pedestrian and bicycle routes may be detoured around the site.

Accessibility: Limited parking for individuals with mobility disabilities displaying a handicap placard will be available in Parking Structure 5 (P5) for $3 per car. Additional parking for those with handicap placards will be available for purchase from the parking kiosk located at the Westholme/Hilgard entrance to campus, where you will be directed to parking.

Ticket holders attending events with His Holiness the Dalai Lama at UCLA on Monday, May 2, are advised to keep in mind several important security details.

Entry: Tickets and photo ID are required for admittance to Royce Hall. Tickets are valid only for the event, date and time noted on the ticket.

Doors to Royce Hall will close 15 minutes before the start of each event; doors open one hour before the start times. Please arrive early to allow enough time to clear security. There will be no admittance for guests arriving late, and tickets will not be refunded.

All guests will be subject to a security search.

Venue restrictions: The following items and activities are not allowed in Royce Hall:

  • Cameras
  • Recording devices
  • Laptop or notebook computers
  • Laser pointers
  • Backpacks, large bags, coolers, or large purses
  • Glass or metal containers
  • Food and beverage
  • Posters, banners or signs of any kind
  • Umbrellas
  • Strollers
  • Flags or flagpoles
  • Sharp objects or any object that may be perceived as a weapon
  • Weapons of any kind
  • Any amplification equipment or noisemakers
  • Unauthorized fliers, brochures, or merchandise
  • Unauthorized collection or commercial activities

If you bring any of these items to the venue, you will be asked to take them back to your car. There will not be a holding, trash or check-in area for you to store or dispose of these items. Guests who must exit the line to return items to their cars must go to the end of the line to again clear security. Please plan accordingly to prevent delays to entrance.

Furthermore:

  • All cell phones must be turned off during all events.
  • Anyone engaging in dangerous or disruptive behavior may be removed from the venue and will not be granted a refund of the ticket price.
  • Pedestrian and bicycle routes may be detoured around the site.
